Why We All Need to Be More Futures Literate

In our webinar, economist and futures literacy expert Dr. Stefan Bergheim showed why futures literacy is a vital skill for navigating complexity. Through a playful “party preparation” exercise, participants explored how everyday decisions reveal the mental models we use to imagine the future. Stefan connected this to anticipation theory and complexity science, highlighting how Futures Literacy Labs (FLLs) can help people—from students to professionals—question assumptions, discover alternatives, and build agency. His message was clear: by becoming more futures literate, we not only anticipate change, we expand our capacity to shape it.
