Framing the Future with Fiction

In this webinar, Dr. Will Slocombe (University of Liverpool) explored how speculative fiction can expand our capacity to think about the future. Rather than predicting gadgets or breakthroughs, science fiction reveals the systems and consequences around them – “not just the automobile, but the traffic jam.” Will showed how speculative fiction helps us move beyond short-term plans to generational timelines, question cultural assumptions, and empower communities to imagine alternatives. His message was clear: if you take the people out of futures, there are no futures.
